IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
The Latest in Laser Hair Removal Technology Right Here in Charlestown.
You may be suprised to know that IPL technology has actually been around for quite a while, about 20 years or so.
How does IPL work? Light energy is generated by a high output flash lamp, then directed through a sapphire block in the operator’s handpiece & towards targets within a person’s skin. This energy is then selectively absorbed by pigment (found in dark hair, brown lesions or freckles) or by small blood vessels.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Light energy directed into the deep pigmented hair follicles is converted into heat, causing death of the hair follicle. Hair in its growing phase (anagen) is more responsive as it contains the most pigment, Coarser dark hair absorbs more energy; blond or white hair will not respond. Multiple treatment sessions are required and the hair becomes finer and sparcer. Treatments are usually well tolerated. Topical anaesthetic creams can be used one hour beforehand but are usually not required.
Uncommon side effects of IPL include hyperpigmentation (darkened patches of skin) or hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin), folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles) or paradoxical increased hair growth.
An average of six visits are required for satisfactory results.
Sun exposure and tanning should be avoided in the month prior to treatment.
Contraindications include pregnancy, active infection, previous keloid scarring, skin cancer/precancerous skin lesions, oral retinoid medications, a bleeding tendency or anticoagulants.
